Things That Go Bump in the Night

It's been a long day, or two or three.  Between the 29 straight hours of travel to reach Vietnam and crossing the International Dateline, time has ceased to have any real meaning.  We are all pretty cross-eyed right now, even though we all slept on our long-haul overnight flight from SFO to Hong Kong.  Sadly, none of us slept very deeply because the flight was bumpy.  And I'm not talking about a little turbulence that lasts for 15 minutes and then smooths out for the rest of the flight.  Oh, no.   I'm talking about the kind of bumpy that lasts for 10 or 11 hours of a 14-hour flight.  Pretty much non-stop.  Oh, yeah, that was fun.  NOT.  For the most part it wasn't scary bumpiness but it was enough to make it difficult to get sound sleep because the plane is constantly bouncing and therefore your head is constantly bouncing and that just isn't conducive to getting much beauty rest.  And the flight from Hong Kong to Singapore wasn't any better except for the fact that that flight only lasted four hours so it was only bumpy for four hours instead of ten or eleven hours.  Am I even making sense right now?  I think I'm having an out-of-body experience.  It's like Groundhog Day and the Twilight Zone have converged in my brain, and let me tell you, it's not a pretty picture.  Do you realize that in the time that we've been traveling, you all have been to bed and slept all night TWICE and we haven't even been to bed once?  Extreme sleep deprivation - it's ugly, people.

Before I faceplant into this extremely hard yet inviting bed, I'll give you a rundown of what the past however many days it took to get here entailed:

10,147 miles traveled
29 hours of total travel time
18 hours, 45 minutes of flight time
8 hours hanging around in airports waiting for flights, connecting to flights, wishing there were no more flights
4 different airports
3 separate flights
3 rough landings
4 airplane meals
2 layovers
1 plane change
2 screaming headaches and
1 moment where we totally lost it and were laughing so hysterically we were crying.

And there you have it.  Welcome to Vietnam!
